Housecleaning [03 Feb 2010|12:59pm]
Hi folks,

It's been way too long since I've updated this community, for which I apologize. I've just updated the master claims list, replied the claims requests that hadn't been answered, and removed claims for essays due in August of last year or before.

New claims can be made here. Thanks!

Richard Sharpe – He's a Rogue, But He's Our Rogue [16 Aug 2009|10:58am]

[ mood | cheerful ]

Title: Richard Sharpe – He's a Rogue, But He's Our Rogue
Author: the_stowaway
Character: Richard Sharpe
Fandom: Sharpe (movie version)
Spoilers: for the entire series
Beta: many thanks to jenna_thorn
Author's Note: For those not familiar with canon, Sharpe is a series of British made-for-TV movies1, based on the novels of Bernard Cornwell, depicting the adventures of Richard Sharpe, an officer in Wellington's army during the Napoleonic Wars – mostly the Peninsular. This essay will concern itself solely with the TV version, which of necessity differs somewhat from the novels, although Cornwell appears to be ok with the film adaptations. Cornwell is also a whole-hearted fan of Sean Bean in the title role; I completely agree with him on this. In fact, Bean is the reason I began watching Sharpe in the first place. Is anyone surprised? I thought not.*g*

The Tenth Doctor: his reach is global, his tower secure; his cause is noble, his power is pure... [11 Aug 2009|03:38am]

Title: his reach is global, his tower secure; his cause is noble, his power is pure...
Author: kalichan
Character: The Tenth Doctor
Fandom: Doctor Who
Spoilers: Through… "Planet of the Dead"

I'm the Doctor. I'm a Time Lord. I'm from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. I'm 903 years old, and I'm the man who's gonna save your lives and all six billion people on the planet below. You got a problem with that?

In that case: Allons-y!

(DW X-mas Special: Voyage of the Damned)

When we were first introduced to the Tenth Doctor, at the end of Series 1’s “Parting of the Ways,” I think that we, like his faithful companion, Rose Tyler, were just a wee bit shell shocked. For those of us who were madly in love with New Who's first doctor (the Ninth, as played by Christopher Eccleston) watching the regeneration was not just heartbreaking – it was terrifying.

After all, we wondered, who could possibly be as off-the-map fantastic as the Ninth Doctor who'd won so many of our hearts in the first series of New Who?

Allons-y!Collapse )

*tries to raise community from the dead* [28 Jun 2009|11:33am]
I'd like to get some activity going at this community again; I know there are lots of new fandoms out there, and plenty of characters who still need love!

Since all existing claims (before the two I've just added today) are a year or more past their deadline, I'm removing all claims that haven't been completed. You're welcome to claim characters again if you're confident you can write an entry for your character in eight weeks.

The master list is here, along with guidelines for writing your essay, and you can claim characters in comments. You're welcome to claim characters and fandoms that aren't listed; some characters are already listed as available (because they were once claimed), but you can always add others.

Honour, Wisdom, Kindness and Courage: Théoden King of Rohan [13 Feb 2008|01:00pm]

Title: Honour, Wisdom, Kindness and Courage: Théoden King of Rohan
Author: the_stowaway
Character: Théoden King of Rohan
Fandom: Lord of the Rings (book!verse)
Spoilers: Does this even apply to a book published in 1954-55? *g*
Beta: viva_gloria
Author's Note: This essay concerns itself with the book, rather than the movies, for, while Peter Jackson will ever have my awed respect for his magnificent achievement, and while Bernard Hill was brilliant as Théoden, it is to the source text that my heart is given first, last and always. I read it first in 1966, and have re-read it at least once a year since. Each time it fills me with love and a renewed sense of wonder.

idol_reflection is now open for business on GreatestJournal as well [09 Aug 2007|02:39pm]

Owing to recent concerns about LJ's terms of service, we're opening a GreatestJournal version of this community, idol_reflection. Please feel free to post your essays on either version of the community, or to cross-post to both. You can also repost essays you've posted here in the past to the GJ community, and in fact we encourage you to do so.

We've reserved the idol_reflection username on InsaneJournal as well, and will consider opening that community to posting as well if that seems to be where large portions of fandom are headed.

Barring disaster, we will keep this community open on LiveJournal, but we wanted to give you another option for posting, and to encourage you to help us back up this community by reposting to the GJ comm -- this community has seen a lot of fabulous work in the last three years, and I'd hate to see any of that work lost.
